Open Architecture. Transparent Modeling. Defensible Results.
APEX, a RESNET accredited cloud-based energy rating software solution targeting residential new construction, leverages the power of DOE's EnergyPlus simulation engine and NREL's OpenStudio-ERI calculation platform to assess the modeled performance of a home relative to a reference home. The energy rating index (ERI) calculated by APEX can be used in a variety of ways, including performance-based energy code compliance, utility incentive programs, national and regional energy efficiency program certification, and sustainability/ESG reporting. APEX is available today and features a fully supported GUI, supports multiple text file input formats, and is accessible as a stand-alone platform, via a modern API, or through our AXIS platform integration.
Why Engine Transparency Matters
Energy ratings impact code compliance, utility incentives, mortgage qualification, appraisals, and builder profitability. Yet not all simulation engines are built the same way. Some operate as proprietary systems where calculation methodologies are not publicly reviewable. Others are built on open-source frameworks that allow industry inspection and validation.
APEX is built on an open-source simulation engine. That difference matters.
When Results Differ
In residential modeling, differences sometimes occur between platforms. With a proprietary engine, you may be forced to trust internal logic. With an open-source engine, you can review assumptions, trace calculation pathways, and identify root causes to build knowledge and confidence in your results. The APEX simulation engine is open-source - meaning the calculation methodology can be reviewed, understood, and validated by the industry. When results differ, you can see why.
Transparency reduces friction and builds long-term credibility and confidence in the energy modeling process. Simply put, proprietary engines do not.
Built for Efficiency, Transparency, and Integrity
APEX is designed for:
Raters and builders seeking transparency, consistency, and trustworthy results
Utilities requiring audit defensibility
Program administrators managing long-term risk
Organizations looking to automate processes leveraging energy models and simulation results
APEX offers superior transparency while enabling operational efficiencies for raters, builders, program administrators, and other key stakeholders that rely on residential energy modeling. APEX's modern API and AXIS integration provide unparalleled inoperability, functionality, and flexibility for the industry. Contact us to learn more about APEX.
AXIS
AXIS, used by leading program sponsors such as NEEA and Energy Trust of Oregon, and most recently deployed for the national NGBS Green program, serves as a centralized data collection, storage, and sharing hub with integrated workflow management and messaging functionality. In addition to supporting the RESNET energy rating and NGBS Green certification processes, the modular architecture of AXIS allows for customization of functionality, visibility, and workflows to meet program-specific needs.
AXIS is a cloud-based data and workflow management platform that streamlines energy ratings and energy efficiency program participation through data sharing by connecting raters/verifiers, certification organizations, QA organizations, utilities and others using a centralized data repository and modern user interface.
